Lesson 2.3: Controlling Table Data Entry

   

 

 

In this exercise you will specify how data will be inputted into a table and create a relationship.

1.                   

Open Lesson 2.3 from the Section 2 folder of your Exercise Files.

 

 

 

2.                   

Open the Vehicles table in Design view.

Click the Number of Cylinders field, and set its Default Value to 6.

 

 

 

3.                   

Click the Manufacturer ID field and set its Required value to Yes.

Close the Vehicles table and click Yes to save the changes.

 

 

 

4.                   

Open the Manufacturers table in Design view.

Click the Manufacturer Name field and set its Required value to Yes.

 

 

 

5.                   

Click the Phone Number field, and click the () icon beside the Input Mask property.

 

 

Save the table when prompted. The default phone number input mask is fine for our purposes, so click Next.

 

 

6.                   

Select the pound sign (#) as the placeholder character and click Next.

 

 

 

7.                   

Click the top radio button in the next screen; this will insert the symbols of the input mask into the table with the phone number. Click Next.

 

 

That completes construction of the input mask; click Finish to exit the Wizard.

Close the Manufacturers table Design view and save the changes.

 

 

8.                   

Click the Relationships button (). When the Relationships window appears with the Show Table dialogue box on top, click Countries, and then Add.

Click Manufacturers, and then Add.

Click Vehicles, and then Add.

 

 

Click Close to close the Show Table dialogue box.

 

 

9.                   

Click and hold the primary key from the Manufacturers table and then drag it on top of the Manufacturer ID field in the Vehicles table.

Click the Enforce Referential Integrity checkbox from the Edit Relationships dialogue box:

 

 

Click Create to establish the relationship.

 

 

10.               

Close the Relationships window and save the changes.
