SECTION 1
Lesson 1.2: Pivot Tables

In this exercise you will create an empty pivot table.

1.

Start Excel and open the workbook named Practice 2 in your Excel 2003 Practice folder.

File->Open

2.

Select one of the cells in the data table titled Profit Table.

Note: The data table should have a row of column headings, with one heading for each column. The table must not contain any empty columns.

3.

From the data menu, choose Pivot Table and Pivot Chart Report. This will open the PivotTable and PivotChart Wizard dialogue box.

4.

Once you see the dialogue box, be sure to check the Microsoft office Excel list

Or database radio button and the Pivot Table radio button. (They are normally

selected by default.)

Click on the Next button to display a second smaller dialogue box.

5.

Make sure that the data range you want to use is selected in the range field. (By clicking the browse button you could navigate to another data source if you wish). If you want to go back a step to the previous dialogue box, simply click the Back button. For this exercise, click the Next button to display the third and final pivot table wizard dialogue box.

6.

The final dialogue box asks if you would like the pivot table to be placed in a new worksheet or an existing worksheet. If you select New worksheet, (new work sheet is selected by default), a new worksheet will be created and the pivot table will be placed in the upper left corner of the new sheet. If you select Existing worksheet, types a cell reference in the text field provided, or click on a worksheet cell to specify a location. The pivot table will be placed with its upper left corner on the cell you specify. For this exercise select New worksheet. You can click the layout button to specify your data now, or click the finish button to first create an empty pivot table, and then arrange your data afterwards. For this exercise, click finish and create an empty pivot table.

The empty PivotTable frame should look like this. It is located on a new worksheet named Sheet4. Notice the column headings (fields) available in the PivotTable Field List that you can choose from to add to the table.

Remember to save your work before exiting Excel.
