SECTION 1
Lesson 1.1: Introduction

The first step in using any program is getting it started. This practice exercise will show you step by step how to start and stop Excel 2003.

1.

Locate the Excel 2003 icon on your desktop and double click it with your left mouse button.

2.

The Excel 2003 screen should now open.

Once you see the Excel screen you are ready to start working.

3.

If you are unable to find the Excel 2003 icon on your desktop, you can still start Excel by using the Start menu.

Click Start, select Programs->Microsoft Office->Microsoft Office Excel 2003, and click the left mouse button.

The Excel 2003 screen should open.

4.

Once You see the Excel screen look for the small red square with a white X in the upper right corner. This is the close button.

A single left mouse click on this button will close Excel, but first, click on any of the numerous small rectangles on the white part of the  Excel screen and type Hello World.

5.

Now, click the close button, and you will be shown the following alert.

Excel is giving you this message because you made changes to the workbook (by entering text). If you click the Yes button, Excel will provide options for saving the changed workbook. If you click the No button, Excel will close.

We are only concerned with closing the workbook at this point, so for now, click the No button.
