SECTION 1
Lesson 1.4: The Basics of File Management

When you first start Excel 2003, by double clicking the Excel icon, or by using the Start menu, you are in fact, creating a new workbook. The workbook you create when you open Excel is called Book1. The words Microsoft Excel, and the file name Book1, can clearly be seen in the title bar of the Excel screen.

You can create more new workbooks by clicking the new button on the standard toolbar. You can also create new workbooks by using the shortcut keys Ctrl + N, or by using the New Workbook task pane.

If you create another workbook while Book1 is open, it will be called Book2. If you create another, it will be called Book3. If you create several of these workbooks, without closing any of them, they will be named Book1, Book2, Book3, Book4, and so on consecutively. If you have several workbooks open simultaneously, you can view them by clicking the Window menu from the menu bar. At the bottom of the Window menu items you will see a list of open workbooks.

Clicking on any of the workbooks in this list will display it. You can close, minimize, or maximize these workbooks by using the window buttons in the upper right corner of the workbook window.
