Closing a workbook is different from saving a workbook. If you have not made any changes to the workbook (perhaps you have only been viewing the workbook data) it is a simple matter to close it. Just left click the workbook close button in the upper right of the Excel screen.
You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + W, or use the File menu option File->Close to close a workbook.
If you have made changes to the workbook (entered new data, or made formatting changes) any attempt to close it will result in a save changes alert
If you click Yes the workbook will close and your changes will be saved. If you click No the workbook will close without saving your changes. Clicking Cancel will remove the alert box without closing the workbook.
