A complex formula involving several cell ranges can be difficult to understand. Individual cells that contain important data can be hard to find on a large worksheet. Cell references like D5:D22 or A33:C33 are somewhat abstract, and don’t really communicate anything about the data they contain.

 In Excel, you can create meaningful names for cells or ranges that can be used to overcome these difficulties.
