SECTION 1
Lesson 1.4: Working with Names and Ranges

In this exercise, you will practice using auto calculate with nonadjacent ranges.

1.

To begin, start Excel 2003 and open the file named Practice 4 in your Excel 2003 Practice folder. Use File->Open, or the open button on the standard toolbar.

Here you have a worksheet with three teams, each containing a list of players and their individual points.

2.

Press and hold the CTRL button and select all the items under the Name label in column B with your mouse. Next, press and hold CTRL and select all the Items under the Name label in column E. Do the same for column H.

Text Box: Status bar

When you have selected the nonadjacent ranges, right click on the status bar and put a check by the word count in the options list. You can see that the total count of the names in your selection is 27.

3.

Next, click on any blank cell to remove the selection. Now, press and hold the CTRL button and use your mouse to select all of the items under the Points label in column C. Use CTRL and your mouse to select the other two nonadjacent Points ranges.

Right click on the status bar, and put a check next to the sum option. You should now see the sum of the points for all of the ranges.

4.

Next, right click on status bar and select the Average option by checking it. The average of all the points in the nonadjacent ranges will be calculated and displayed in the status bar.

5.

Finally, Use CTRL and your mouse button to select the names and points together as a nonadjacent range (columns B and C). Repeat this step for the other two teams and put a check by Count in the auto calculate option menu.

You will now see a total count for all items (names and points) in the selection.
