SECTION 2
Lesson 2.1: Working with Lists

To create a list, from an existing range, select a given range of data in adjacent columns, and right click on any cell in the range. This will display a menu with a Create list option.

Click the create list option to display a small dialogue box showing the selected range.

If there are column headings in the first row of the range you select, check the box that says My list has headers.

Make sure the cell range shown is the range that you want for your list (if it is not, just type the correct range in the text field).

Click the OK button to create your list when you are ready.

This is a list created from a block of existing data.

To create a list from scratch, open an empty worksheet, and enter some appropriate column labels for you data across the top row. Try to use adjacent columns so the resulting list will be as organized as possible.

You can create a list at this point, based on just the column labels, by selecting the cells containing the labels, right clicking on a cell, and choosing Create List from the menu options that are shown.

When you see the Create List box, make sure that your row of labels have been selected properly, check the My list has headers box and click OK.

This is an example of a list made from column headings without data.

The blue asterisk indicates the row where you should enter your data.

You can also enter data under your column labels before you create your list. When you are finished entering data, simply select the block of data making sure to include the top row that has your column labels. Right click on any cell in the selected range, and choose Create List from the menu. Make sure your cell references for the range are correct, and check the box that says My list has headers. When you click OK, your range will be transformed into a list.
