SECTION 2
Lesson 2.2: Using the Work Breakdown Structure Code

Although Project automatically assigns a WBS code to all tasks, you may want to customize it. To do this, click the Project menu, choose WBS, and click Define Code. You will then see this dialog:

This looks awfully complicated, but it’s not. Just make a choice for each level’s sequence, length, and separator. (There are drop-down menus for each cell to make life easy.)

In this example, we’ve created a new, alphabetical code that has been applied to our tasks:

A.      Have rough draft completed

AA. Create style guide for executives

AA. Meet with CEO

aaa.          Schedule Meetings

aaa.          Initial Meeting

aaa.          Follow-Up Meeting

AA. Have CEO Prepare Letter

AA. Create financial section

aaa.          Have auditor prepare balance sheet

aaa.          Ask auditor to create summary and his notes

You can see that things are still in the same order, although they have been identified differently. If we move tasks, however, we will have to use the WBS menu to re-number our tasks.
