SECTION 1
Lesson 1.4: Modifying Clip Art and Pictures

The Picture toolbar has all necessary features to modify pictures. The picture toolbar is only active when a picture is inserted or selected, but can be found under Toolbars under the View menu.

Most of the Picture toolbar features can be found in the Format Picture dialog box, and are displayed here as shortcuts. Let’s look at what types of commands are on the Picture toolbar, the previous lesson has already introduced you to the first two.

This is the Insert picture icon; it will open a window allowing you to locate the picture you want to insert.

The Insert Picture from Scanner or Camera opens a dialog box commanding your scanner or camera to insert a picture.

The Colour command drops down to offer colour options, such as Greyscale, Black and White, Washout, and Automatic (which is the picture’s or clip art’s original colour).

More Contrast will darken your image giving you sharper quality.

Less Contrast will lighten your image giving you a less intense image. More and Less Contrast go hand in hand; using both will even out the image if you have applied more contrast than desired.

More Brightness will increase the amount of light in your image.

Less Brightness will decrease the amount of light in the image. These features, like the Contrast features, allow you to apply the perfect amount of light to your picture or clip art.

This is the cropping feature, it allows you to resize the picture or clip art by removing the outer edges of the picture or clip art. This is great to use when you have unwanted space surrounding the picture’s focal point.

Line Style will outline your picture or clip art with a border.

The Text Wrapping feature is great to use when inserting pictures among text. It provides options such as placing the picture or clip art in line with text, or placing it behind text as a background.

The Format Picture command opens the Format Picture dialog box. Many of the features we just looked at are located here. In the Format Picture dialog box you can adjust Colour and Lines, Size, Layout, Picture, and Web options.

The Set Transparent Colour allows you to make certain aspects of the picture transparent, meaning you will be able to see through certain points of the picture.

At any time while you are modifying your picture, and are not satisfied with the result, select the Reset command and the picture or clip art will return to its original size and quality.
