SECTION 2
Lesson 2.2: Internet And Networking Tools

With Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) you can share your Internet connection with all other computers on your home or office network. This can be utilized with your dial-up modem or your high speed Internet connection. This does require that you have a home or office network already set up and also a combination of two network different connections. (For example, you could have two network adapters or a dial-up modem and network adapter. Two modems will not work). The computer who is sharing the Internet connection (and has the ICS option enabled) is known as the host. The computers connected to this host are known as the clients or guests.

The simplest way to set up Internet connection sharing is to use the Network Setup Wizard. You may also share the Internet on a connection manually. To do this, perform the steps below.

  1. Open the Control Panel and select the Network and Internet Connections and then the Network Connection icon.
  2. Right click on the desired Internet connection (the connection which has the Internet connected to it.) and select Properties.
  3. Now that you are in the connection properties window, click the advanced tab at the top.
  4. Under the Internet Connection Sharing box check the box to allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection. (Note: you also have the option for Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection. This is useful for shared dial-up connections when the connection must be temporarily used.)
  5. Hit the OK button to apply the settings.
