SECTION 4
Lesson 4.1: Managing Pictures

Windows, and most modern digital cameras, supports Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). This means when you plug your camera into the computer and turn it on, Windows XP will automatically detect it and open the Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard. This wizard enables you to install scanners, digital cameras, digital video cameras, and other image-capturing devices so the data on the device can be transmitted on to your computer. For now, let’s just concentrate on importing pictures from a digital camera.

When a digital camera is connected to the computer and turned on, the following window will appear for a brief moment while it establishes a connection with the digital device.

This is the next window where you are prompted to continue. To continue, click the Next button.

The above window shows the available pictures on the digital camera, and allows you to select your desired pictures. You may also make slight modifications to a photo in this section. When you are done click the Next button to continue.

Next, you are prompted for a name for the picture or group of pictures you are importing from your digital camera. You are also prompted for a location to save your photo(s), with a Browse button.

A process window is shown with the new location of the files and a progress bar representing the copying process. When the progress bar reaches 100% the next window will automatically appear.

This Other Options portion of the wizard provides you with helpful questions to point you in the proper direction. At this point your pictures have been copied to the specified folder and the wizard is now asking you, “What do you want to do?” The three options presented are:

Publish these pictures to a Web site

If this radio button is selected you will be taken through the wizard and prompted to select your desired photos and a service provider.

Order prints of these pictures from a photo printing Web site

If this radio button is selected you will be taken through the wizard and prompted to select your desired photos and a registered photo printing site.

Nothing, I’m finished working with these pictures

If this radio button is selected you will be taken to the next window.

The final window provides you with a summary. This includes how many picture(s) were copied and the location the pictures were saved to. Click the Finish button to complete the Scanner and Camera Wizard. Now your pictures are on your computer.
