SECTION 3
Lesson 3.5: Using Objects

The procedure for inserting an object depends on what type of information you want to create.

Let’s go over the procedures for inserting objects we’ve already learned about:

-          Drawing Canvas: Insert – Picture – New Drawing

-          AutoShape: Insert – Picture – AutoShape

-          Diagram: Insert – Diagram

-          Charts: Insert – Picture – Chart

-          Text boxes: Insert – Text Box

Other objects that we haven’t learned about include frames, charts, and tables.

To insert an OLE object, click the Insert menu and click Object. You’ll see this dialog:

The contents of the Object Type list will differ depending on what applications you have installed. Once you choose a type and click OK, your Word screen will look quite different.

With this object, we chose Bitmap Image. When we clicked OK, the default application for editing Bitmap Images (Paint) was opened into our Word screen. We can now use the controls of the Paint application to modify our object (seen in the square box with the scroll bars; you can resize this box just like a drawing canvas).

Once you’re done editing your object, click outside the object box to return to the Word screen. The object is now in your document:

You can click on it to format it (in this case, picture formatting options would be available) or delete it, or double-click on it to edit it in its original application.
