Lesson 3.1: Creating an Outline

   

 

 

As you work on your outline, you will also find that you need to move sections around. Once again, Word’s outlining tool makes this a snap!

 

The first thing to remember is that if you want a heading’s subordinate text to go with the heading, you must expand it first so that the entire item is selected:

 

 

Then, drag and drop your text to where you want it, or use the Move Up/Move Down buttons () on the Outlining toolbar to get it where you want it.

 

 

If we had just placed our cursor in the Taking a Message line and moved it, here’s what would have happened:

 

 

This can be a good thing if you decide that a topic is better suited to another section in your document, but it can be a pain if you do it by accident. Remember that the Undo command is your friend in situations like these!

 

You can also drag and drop and move subordinate headings just like major headings. In this case, we’ll use that command to fix our error.
