SECTION 3
Lesson 3.1: Creating an Outline

1.

Open Microsoft Office Word 2003. (If Word is already open, create a blank document.)

2.

Click the View menu and click Outline.

3.

In the new document, type My Report on Australia. (Since this is the first line in a new document and you’re using Outline View, it will automatically be Level 1 text.)

Press Enter and type Wildlife.

Press Enter and type Customs.

Press Enter and type Statistics.

Press Enter and type Major Cities.

4.

Now, let’s add some sub-topics to these headings.

Click to place your cursor at the end of the word Wildlife and press Enter.

Press Tab and then type Kangaroos.

Press Enter. The next line is automatically at Level 2, so we just need to type Echidna.

Let’s press Enter one more time and type Koala.

Notice that the word Wildlife now has a plus sign next to it.

5.

Perhaps we should cover statistics before we talk about wildlife. Place your cursor in the word Wildlife, then click the Move Down arrow () until it is below Major Cities.

6.

Oops! We forgot to select the group! Well, that’s easy to fix. Press Enter to create a blank line after the word Wildlife. Then, let’s select the lines Kangaroo, Echidna, and Koala and drag them to below Wildlife.

7.

Click to place your cursor after the word Customs.

Press Enter.

Type Make sure we cover cool Australian phrases like “Bring a plate,” “arvo,” “g’day mate,” “loo,” and “bloke.”

Now, click the Show First Line Only button () on the Outlining toolbar. The sentence we just typed is not affected because it is at Level 1.

8.

Place your cursor in the sentence we just typed. Click the Demote to Body Text button on the outlining toolbar.

Note how the text changes and how it is truncated.

9.

Save your document as Australia Outline.

10.

Close Microsoft Office Word 2003.
