The easiest way to mark your text for your table of contents is to use heading styles. Each style will appear on a different level of the table of contents, like this:
To mark out the different sections of your document, just select the text that you want to appear in the table of contents and choosing the heading style/level from the styles drop-down menu:
Then, use the New Style dialog to name and create your style. You can even click the Format button to set advanced options for your style.
Remember that this style will not be applied to the actual text of your table of contents. Rather, it will mark text in the document that will be included in the table of contents. The difference is important!
Once you’ve customized the style to your liking, click OK. Then, mark your text with the styles you’ve created to denote different levels in your table of contents. (We’ll get to those options in a moment.)
