SECTION 3
Lesson 3.2 Creating a Table of Contents

You can also create a custom style to mark the different levels of your document. (If you’re not familiar with styles, you may want to take our intermediate level course.)

Creating a style to identify your table of contents text is the same as creating any other style. First, open the Styles pane using the double-A icon () on the formatting toolbar, or click the Format menu and click Styles and Formatting. Then, in the Styles task pane, click the New Style button.

Then, use the New Style dialog to name and create your style. You can even click the Format button to set advanced options for your style.

Remember that this style will not be applied to the actual text of your table of contents. Rather, it will mark text in the document that will be included in the table of contents. The difference is important!

Once you’ve customized the style to your liking, click OK. Then, mark your text with the styles you’ve created to denote different levels in your table of contents. (We’ll get to those options in a moment.)
