SECTION 1
Lesson 1.3: Viewing Your Files

If you’re working with just one document, there’s a way to arrange that, too! You can split a document so you can see two parts of it at the same time.

The first way to do a split is by clicking the Window menu and clicking Split. Once you do that, your cursor will change to a line. You can move this line up or down in the document just by moving your mouse:

Once you have the split where you want it, click once. Now your document is split into two:

This does not make two separate documents; your document will still appear as one entry in the taskbar. Each window in the document actually contains a whole copy of the document; whatever changes you make in one part will be reflected in both. You can, however, scroll to different parts in the document in each window, which can make comparing and editing easy. You can only insert one split per document.

Another way to insert a split is by clicking and dragging the small grey bar above the scroll bar. You can see it circled in red in the sample below:

You can use this bar to insert a split the same way we did from the menu: click on it, drag it to where you want the split, and release your cursor.

If you want to move the split after you’ve inserted it, you can do so by clicking on it and dragging to your desired position. When you click and hold on that grey bar circled in the sample above, you can drag it to anywhere you want in your document.

When you want to return to the normal, unified view, you can double-click on the grey bar to remove the split. You can also click the Window menu and clicking Remove Split.
