SECTION 2
Lesson 2.3: Using Headers and Footers

Page numbers are probably the dynamic field you will use most often.  There are a few ways to insert page numbers. Remember that for all methods except the first, you must first place your cursor in the header or the footer (wherever you want the page number to be). Then, place your cursor in the position you want page numbers (left, right, or centre) to appear.

If you want to…

The advantage to using automatic page numbering is that every page is numbered for you. And, every page is updated as pages are added, moved, changed, or deleted.

Page numbers are like other text in headers and footers: they can be edited at any time, and you can add formatting (like font style, size, and effects) to make them stand out.

You can also format page numbers using the Header and Footer toolbar. Click the Page Number Format button () and the window seen below will appear.

You can use the first option in this dialog to change the number format from Arabic (2,2,3) to Roman (I, II, III) or to alphabet (a,b,c). You can also change the way page numbers look; some options allow for dashes around the numbers.

The second option allows you to include the chapter number with the page number; we’ll look at creating chapters later on in this book. Our last option allows you to continue numbering from the previous section, or to start at a certain number.

You can also access this box by clicking in the header or footer where you have your page number, then clicking the Insert menu and clicking Page Numbers From that dialog, click Format:

You also can skip clicking Format and use the above dialog to edit some page number options. The Position menu will be greyed out, and the alignment may be blank; this is because you can change these options in the header or footer themselves. You can use this dialog, however, to choose whether or not to show a number on the first page.
