SECTION 2
Lesson 2.4: Using Paragraph Tools

First, let’s talk about how to view some of the markers we have put in place. Some markers, like page breaks, are easy to see as a new page starts. Other markers, like section breaks, usually aren’t so obvious.

To turn on your document’s markings, click the Tools menu and click Options. On the View tab (which should be open by default), you will see a section that says Formatting Marks. (This is circled in the sample on the left.)

Here’s a list of formatting marks you can enable:

  1. Tab characters
  2. Spaces (which will appear as small dots)
  3. Paragraph marks
  4. Hidden text (enabled in the Fonts dialog box)
  5. Optional hyphens
  6. All: Shows all formatting marks

Just check the items you want to enable, and then click OK.

To enable all items, you can click the paragraph icon () on the standard toolbar, or use the Ctrl+Shift+8 keyboard shortcut.

Here’s what a document with formatting marks enabled looks like. We’ve labelled some formatting marks for you using the list above as a legend.

To turn these markings off, we could go back to Tools and Options and click the View tab, and uncheck the items we enabled. If you enabled all items (even if it was from the Options dialog box), you can also use the paragraph icon on the standard toolbar, or the Ctrl+* shortcut, to turn them off.
