SECTION 3
Lesson 3.2: Managing Styles

To open the styles organizer, click the Tools menu and click Templates and Add-ins.

Then, click the Organizer button in the bottom left hand corner; you can see it circled in the sample above. Once you click that button, this window will appear:

In columns 1 and 3, you can see the styles currently available in the current document (1) and the current template (3). Using menus 3 or 4, you can change the document and template.

If you want to pick a different template, click the Close File button under the menu labelled with a 4. The Close File button will change to an Open File button. Click that, and then you will have a browse window to pick the template you want.

You can select a template in either the document or the template list and use the buttons in the column marked with a 5 to rename or delete that style. (Remember that renaming or deleting a style will affect any text that is based on that style. If you change a style in the global template normal.dot, this will affect any future documents you create based on that template.)

You can also choose files from the template list and click the Copy button to copy them to your current document. (You could change the document listed to normal.dot and copy styles there as well.)

The Description portion of the window (marked with a 6 above) will show you a description of the selected style.

Any changes you make cannot be undone; once you click the Close button those changes will be applied. The organizer can be a great way to copy a few select styles from a template you use, without using the whole template (by opening it) or having all of items in your document (by attaching it).

That’s all there is to using the styles organizer!
