You can also insert symbols into your document. Symbols can be formatted like regular text. For most symbols, font faces don’t apply, but font sizes, colours, and effects can be used to make symbols stand out.
To insert a symbol, click the Insert menu and click Symbol.
Here are the steps to follow to insert a symbol.
1. Pick the font you want to use. By default, Word will display symbols in the current font. Choosing a font can be important as some fonts (such as Wingdings) are all symbols and contain symbols not seen in other fonts. 3. Choose a subset of the font. This can be useful to jump to a particular set of symbols, such as punctuation. 3. Click a symbol in this box to select it for insertion, or use the scroll bar to scroll through the symbols. (Scrolling may change the font and/or subset displayed in menus 1 and 3.) 4. This list contains symbols you have recently used. Click one of these symbols to select it. 5. These two menus display the character code for the symbol. 6. Click the Insert button to insert the selected symbol into your document. Once you click the Insert button, the Cancel button will become a Close button.
That’s all there is to inserting a symbol! If you want to format or delete the symbol, you can do so right from your Word document, just as you would format normal text.
Here are some samples of symbols. You can see that we’ve changed the font, type, size, effect, and colour to make each symbol stand out:
